Flora and Fauna as Carnival Costume Inspiration —
Flora — National flowers, like Trinidad's Chaconia and Belize’s Black Orchid, symbolize natural beauty and cultural identity in your costumes.
Fauna — National birds, such as the Scarlet Ibis of Trinidad and the Keel-Billed Toucan of Belize, are emblematic of the islands' natural heritage.
Event Experience —
Set in the garden of Soho Warehouse, the event transforms the space into a lush playground for Caribbean and African music lovers excited to represent their home countries. DIY costumes and artistic expressions inspired by your national birds and flowers along with incredible DJ sets will create a new, intentional Carnival Tabanca vibe.
Political and Cultural Dimensions —
Pre-Colonial Caribbean — Carnival Tabanca this year highlights the Diaspora's identity before imperialism, challenging each other to envision our countries beyond the circumstantial, colonially-induced need for national flags.
Cultural Pride — Emphasizing natural symbols over flags fosters true Pan-African unity and celebrates our shared heritage.
Environmental Realities and Climate Change —
Acknowledging Climate Change — Carnival Tabanca humbly acknowledges climate change, referencing tragedies like Hurricane Beryl to highlight the need to preserve natural environments.
Ode to Indigenous Heritage — Focusing on Caribbean flora and fauna honors our indigenous heritage and it’s a call for environmental protection.
