PanCraft – Making a Steel Pan • Live from Trinidad & Tobago

pancraft-05.png

Craft Contemporary and foreigner take a virtual trip to the twin island cultural powerhouse of Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹 on Friday, April 30th for 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 – a live presentation of making what is widely considered the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century: the Steel Pan.

Originated in 1930s Trinidad & Tobago (in the shadows of British colonialism), the pan is a pitched percussion instrument, toned chromatically, made from steel drums that were originally derived from oil drums. The steel pan was forged from Carnival culture's reliance on homegrown percussive and melodic rhythm; a rhythm outlawed by colonial forces in an effort to erase African, Indian and Indigenous cultural expression.

The invention and evolution of the steel pan is a story of relentless craft, and we are connecting with one of the leading fabricators of the instrument to bring this story to the fore.

𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱. 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. 📡

Friday, April 30 @ 1pm

*Located in Laventille (the birthplace of the Steel Pan), Panland (our host and venue for the afternoon) is one of the leading manufacturers of Trinidad's national instrument.

MZ101 2year ANNIVERSARY

Celebrating 2 years of working with my brother Langa bka SwaziSunshine.

With a deep/long 3+ hour mix by the both of us, this is a session that you will not want to miss.

While South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago may share a common vibe for riddim and movement, both societies also share a unique battle against Gender Based Violence. For as long as any generation can remember, women in South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago have been under severe threat of violence by the hands of not only strangers, but their loved ones as well.

GBV is accepted as a normalized part of SA & TT culture; so much so, that recent public outrage for the countless victims has been met with victim blaming rhetoric by both nations’ governments.

With support from Red Bull, this Mzansi 101 session will function as a united fundraising front supporting Ntethelelo Foundation (SA) and CEDAW Committee of TT; two organizations driving policy change against GBV and normalized rape culture in both SA & TT.

Whether it's $1 or $100, please donate what you can! It will go a long way.

FORE-SITEº

fore-site-05.png

***SPONSORED BY WRAY & NEPHEW USA

AFRODIASPORIC FASHION, MUSIC AND ART REINVENTS ITSELF BY THE MINUTE.

While some of it is the flavor du jour. Some of it becomes a new standard, a new classic, a new world.

It’s hard to tell what kinds of Black rhythm will stand the test of time (people used to say Amapiano was a fad).

What’s not hard is to GIVE FLOWERS TO OUR NEWEST CREATORS; give them their flowers now. While they’re on fire. When they need the praise the most.

FORE–SITEº focuses on shining a light on the people currently fueling the next iterations of what Afrodiasporic music sounds like, what it looks like, and what it feels like.

Starting on March 4, we will engage artists and creators from around the world in a quick, casual and conversational talk-and-mix pieces.

See the faces, hear the voices, and absorb the vibe of what’s next in the world of African & Caribbean dance music.

ROADBLOCK™ RALLY - another underground African/Caribbean operation - Frieze Weekend - Los Angeles

roadblock rally art graphics-25.png

Alvaro Barrington + foreigner present ROADBLOCK™ RALLY: an underground African/Caribbean operation celebrating five (5) years of Curate LA.

Once again, we are converting another warehouse into the kind of block party session that you thought could only be found in the streets of Lagos, Kingston, Port of Spain or Belize City.

But it’s 2020/20henny/20plenty, so we have to block up the road with real reinforcements for the first ROADBLOCK™ of the year. That’s why we are joining forces with the Brooklyn-Grenadian artist Alvaro Barrington’s London Mainstay event called The Rally.

roadblock rally art graphics-26.png

To make this even more of a moment, we are celebrating 5 years of the indispensable, the inimitable, the indelible art resource that is Curate LA by granting FREE ENTRY TO ALL CURATE LA MEMBERS. (Not a member? Don’t trip; become a member for $5 here.)

roadblock rally art graphics-27.png

Don’t forget: this is an Afro/Caribbean operation, so get your zanku, your pilolo, your palance and your genna bounce in order because we only allowing Dancehall, Soca, and Afrobeat to pass.

Music by the original roadblock crew: LADY X, TOMI TRIBE, SHACIA PAYNE, and FOREIGNER.

Special guest DJs: LIL C (uk) + MMIJtheDJ (brooklyn)

SELECTORS INCLUDE:

SPECIAL GUESTS:

LIL C (ldn x 🇯🇲) + MMIJtheDJ (bk x 🇵🇦)

ROADBLOCK DJ’s:

LADY X 🇧🇿 Part artist manager, part filmmaker, part chef, part jouvayist/wukkist, Lady X is that high performing shapeshifter only few of us can be. Next Saturday, however, Lady X is gonna be bringing what she's best known for: that heavy-hitting dancehall + soca sound only a true daughter of Belize can deliver.

TOMI TRIBE 🇳🇬 Directly responsible for the unwavering Afrobeat movement that has taken over the city, Tomi Tribe is an artistic force that deserves way more credit than he's been given. Because of his commitment to live remixes and edits of the noteworthy Afrobeat hits, no two Tomi Tribe sets sound alike, and on Saturday February 15th you can expect a fresh new take on all that shaku shaku/zanku/gwara gwara-inducing riddim that LA can’t get enough of.

SHACIA PAYNE 🇯🇲 When Shacia touch the dance, you can feel her regal essence before you even find out about her bloodline. As a curator, Shacia has established fresh, new club-bound institutions that not only champion Jamaican music and culture, but also uplift a sisterhood in music that does the diaspora justice. As a DJ, she's the go-to artist if you want a loud, deep and sexy selection of dancehall that takes you from resurrecting your jerry springer to droppin into full genna bounce. Come get your dosage of Shacia on Saturday February 15th.

FOREIGNER 🇹🇹 alias d smol wine emancipator aias louverture nice child alias tourist yute alias zesser tourism, I am married to the artform that is finding the best, most fun ways to properly contextualize Afrodiasporic music and dance in LA. On Saturday Feb 15, I'm delivering my sound packaged in the usual inclusive, accessible, high energy space that we all enjoy. This time around, though, I'm trying a few different things: (1) I'm designing the space to center dancers (no innocent bystanders will be tolerated), and (2) I'm rigging up a half-dozen classic BMW's to set the mood and light up the dancefloor. I hope you can make it out because I gotta kick of 20henny in the maddest way possible!

XFER™ (LA) with LYCOX + TOTAL FREEDOM + DYANI

RA xfer 1.png

“The Western Unions and MoneyGrams that dot North American cities hold a special place in the immigrant's world; the money transfer interfaces help us make sense of the intense and trying experiences that come along with making our way in America, Europe and wherever else jobs, opportunities and the chance for growth and mobility exists. Transfers keep us grounded and focused while living abroad—it's how we send the bread home. Whether you're an Angolan living in Paris or a Trini living in NYC; we're all intimately familiar with the transfer lifestyle.”

- Adam "foreigner" Cooper

Over two days in the first weekend of November, Resident Advisor and foreigner will present a new concept, XFER, promoting nuanced afrodiasporic sound to  Los Angeles and Mexico City. DJ Lycox, the electrifying Príncipe-signed producer using elements of kuduro, batida and tarraxinha within his innovative club sound, will headline each show.

Starting in Los Angeles on November 8th, we'll be working with scene lynchpin foreigner, whose tireless efforts throwing parties like Junkyard Jouvert, PLAY and ROADBLOCK™ have injected LA's underground scene with a much-needed dose of unhinged Afrodiasporic energy.

On the 9th, Lycox and foreigner will travel with us to Mexico City, where we'll bring the noise to Yu Yu Club, the intimate spot that's quickly become central in the CDMX scene.

XFER is about tracing the global boom in Afrodiasporic club sounds back to the creators, the innovators, whether they're in Kampala, Lisbon or the suburbs of Paris. In doing so, we aim to amplify the cross-cultural innovation that's already happening and to send the money home so that the sounds and communities behind them can continue to flourish.
